All About Me

ello. I'm Evan. Or Ev, if you'd like. Thanks for coming to my site. You may know me from my band, Shaimus, and/or through the popular PS2 game Guitar Hero, in which you can play along with my guitar solo in "All Of This," a bonus song unlock. You may also know me from hearing my version of the Eagles Fight Song on WMMR in Philadelphia. Or you may not know me at all. I wouldn't be surprised. Although Shaimus is my main project, I also do everything else music-related that I can. I have a ton of solo material, and I like writing and playing for random musical projects.

I love music, and music is my life. Despite the fact that guitar is clearly the coolest instrument ever, I also dabble in vocals, drums, keys, harmonica, mandolin, ukulele, and anything else I can get my grubby little hands on. I have an obsession with songwriting, cool guitar solos, and weird noises, and I believe that music is very much like steak: it can be a transcendent experience if done just right. Although I mostly play rock and blues and funky stuff, I really just love music in general and listen to all sorts of crazy shit.

I have been playing guitar since I was about 12 1/2 and daydreaming of being a rock star since I was born. In elementary school I learned the recorder, participated in random musical oragnizations in church, started formal music training on the sax, and listened to Aerosmith and Motley Crue. In an effort to spurn authority figures (and because I had already memorized how to play "The Pink Panther" theme), I quit sax and took up guitar in middle school. About 6 months later I was playing in my first band and that was that. We were not good, but they were some of the best times of my life, and since then I've played with almost 30 bands, solo artists, and other musicians in some way, shape, or form, both live and in the studio. In fact, there has only been a small amount of time since I started playing guitar that I haven't been a member of at least one band.

I grew up in the Philadelphia area (born in Medford, NJ, moved to Malvern, PA when I was 4). For a long time I wanted to be a cartoonist and drawing was the focus of my life, but soon my passion shifted completely to music and I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston on a partial scholarship in 2001. During my senior year Shaimus formed and we moved to Los Angeles in 2005, where I got my first tan (which immediately faded away the moment I stepped inside). We were fortunate enough to have a song appear in Guitar Hero, which blew up in popularity and helped us gain quite a bit of exposure. And in case you are wondering, I cannot play my own solo in that game. It's freakin' hard.

One day in 2006 in a fit of boredom I recorded a rock guitar version of the Eagles Fight Song for fun. After getting a positive response from friends, I sent it to the guys at the Preston & Steve morning show on WMMR in Philly. They were cool enough to start playing it on the show and invited me to play it live on the air that December (that's the picture on this page). If you like morning radio, these guys are the best (and #1 in Philly), so check 'em out.

Outside of music I'm pretty boring, although I generally like to live in a shroud of mystery that makes me appear more interesting than I actually am. I love movies and have an odd fascination with science, particularly theoretical and quantum physics (which I occasionally even understand). I like cracking jokes at inappropriate times, making fun of commercials, and playing frisbee. I enjoy traveling, beer, and am easily distracted by shiny things. I am a big fan of the Eagles and Phillies. I also spend way too much time online, particularly on MySpace, so please befriend me and we can talk. At the moment, my one true ambition in life is to work full-time to leave some sort of disfiguring scar on the world of music. And maybe do some good in the rest of the world, as well.
